Why are Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Blatantly Attacking Israel Our Only Democratic Mideast Ally?

In recent days our Secretary of Defense has put his cards on the table and given Israel an ultimatum “Get to the damned negotiating table,” where the cards are stacked against Israel. This curt demand was made public Friday December 2nd at the leftist Brookings Institute’s Saban Center for Middle East Policy. A day later Secretary of State Clinton railed against Israel by supporting the policies of Israel’s radical left minority. She accused Israel of disrespecting women’s rights. This is how they treated America’s only long-time democratic ally in the Middle East – with total disrespect.

Our public officials’ adversarial role was forthcoming despite unprecedented concessions made by Israel which included a 10 month legal building moratorium in Judea and Samaria and Jerusalem. At the same time, the PA refused to negotiate or even recognize the existence of the Jewish state. Prime Minister Netanyahu had even offered to speak with President Abbas this past September when they were at the UN in New York and his offer was rejected. It is the Palestinians who are not coming to the negotiating table, to whom Panetta’s profane command should have been directed.

The question arises: If the “Palestinians” will not even recognize the existence of a Jewish state, who will they negotiate with? The “Palestinians” have refused to recognize Israel’s very existence. Is it possible to negotiate with a non-existent adversary? It appears obvious that the answer to this question is “no.” There cannot be negotiations with an invisible non-entity, a non-existent second party. Which leaves the Israelis negotiating with themselves, a rather impossible assignment.

Our undiplomatic Secretaries of State and Defense need to rethink their position and behave in a more civil fashion to their allies, rather than fantasizing about making would-be friends with our enemies, whose countries are in turmoil and are being taken over by the tyrannical, barbaric Islamist Muslim Brotherhood.

Both Secretary Panetta and Secretary Clinton can begin to bring Israel and the Palestinians together by demanding that the Palestinians recognize the Jewish state of Israel. Until both parties recognize each other they cannot possibly have meaningful negotiations.

Kansas Governor Sam Brownback honored the late Vrem Levens and his wife, Esther Levens, founder and president of the Unity Coalition for Israel (UCI) at a special commemorative event held at the Elephant Club in Kansas City on June 22.

The proclamation states that Vrem Levens devoted his life to Kansas politics and strong public policy support for the nation of Israel. He was a member of the Sonnebom Institute, which helped prepare for an independent Israeli state and worked tirelessly to give a not-yet independent Israel the means to defend itself from foreign attack.

Vrem’s efforts had a lasting effect on Esther, who, after his death, established Voices United for Israel, now known as the Unity Coalition for Israel, to bring Christians and Jews who share a common bond of freedom and justice together to work for the safety and security of the beleaguered state of Israel.

Brownback praised Esther for her public efforts on the U.S.-Israel relationship.

“I don’t know of a person in America that’s done more for that relationship — particularly in bringing Christians into a pro-Israel community — than Esther Levens has done,” the governor said. “I mean this on a national and global basis, here is a humble woman who I’ve seen in numerous meetings in Washington, D.C., and she’s been the organizing person.”

Brownback called Vrem “a local guy,” “one of ours, … moving on a national and international basis.”
Vrem was instrumental in sponsoring Israel Bond events and chaired a citywide event featuring then Ambassador Yitzhak Rabin and Senator Bob Dole. Among UCI’s many pro-Israel activities were two major Washington, D.C., events that honored Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his first term of office.

Esther’s efforts through UCI are currently concentrated on two critical areas:

1) Enforcing the Jerusalem Embassy Act to move the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a bill passed by Congress that became law in 1995, and

2) Encouraging U.N. members to vote against a Palestinian effort to unilaterally establish a state in contradiction to the OSLO accords that require direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

The following issues, she says, must be addressed by the Palestinians:

• Recognize Israel’s existence as a Jewish State
• Recognize Jerusalem as the undivided capitol of Israel
• Renounce terrorism by changing the PLO and Hamas charters that vow to annihilate Israel
• Reform their educational system that promotes hatred and terrorism
• Rehabilitate Palestinian refugees by eliminating UNRWA and charging UNHCR with resettlement
• Recognize equal rights for Muslims, Christians, Jews and women living under their rule

It was a very strong, bi-partisan showing of Representatives who have signed onto H.R. 1006, a bill seeking to finally fulfill US Law 104-45 and move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the eternal capital of Israel, where it rightly belongs.

Moving the US Embassy back to Jerusalem is the best way Americans can show their solidarity with Israel, our strongest ally during these trying times.
